I Don't Like Dead Air
Richard Rost

Last week I talked about quality over quantity, and I still stand by that. My goal is to spend more time building higher-end developer content and more in-depth material for my paid members. That hasn't changed. That's still where a lot of my focus is going.

But after a couple of weeks of working that way, I noticed something I didn't like. There hasn't been much going out publicly on the YouTube channel or the website. I've been recording, working behind the scenes, building things, but from the outside it looks like... nothing. And I don't like that at all. I've been putting out content almost every business day for over five years now, and those empty gaps on the calendar... the dead air... just doesn't sit right with me.

So I've been rethinking the approach a bit.

What I'm going to start doing is mixing in shorter "Fast Tip" style videos. These are quick, under-three-minute explainers. Things like terminology, basic concepts, quick answers. The kind of stuff I can produce in under an hour instead of spending several hours on a full TechHelp episode. That way I can batch a bunch of them and keep a steady stream of content going, even while I'm working on the bigger, more advanced material in the background.

You're probably going to start seeing more of those pop up. If it means some of the bigger projects take a little longer, that's fine. I'd rather keep things moving than have the channel look like it's gone dark. People have noticed. The comments and emails have been non-stop this week. Am I OK? What's happened? Stuff like that.

Plus, there are still a ton of keywords out there that I'm not ranking for, and I want to fix that. So if you ever search for something related to Microsoft Access and I don't show up, let me know. Seriously. I'll turn it into a quick video and fill that gap.

As for the Kanban board I teased, I spent more time on it today and it's coming along nicely. I still have some recording to do, but that's on deck. That's going to be a full TechHelp video, an Extended Cut, and a Developer Lesson. I'm planning to get that out this weekend, along with Quick Queries 90. I'm not going anywhere this weekend, so it's all getting done.

More to come soon. Stay tuned.

Maybe do a Monday (quicky), Wednessday thats longer and has member bonus., and then Friday for Quick Queries.... just an insane thought. That way stuff is happening and maybe just maybe you keep the traffic around?! Just an insane thought that I will toss into the round file now.
