Yesterday, Alex messaged me to let me know that the "jump to the end" feature on comment threads wasn't working. I already knew I'd broken it somehow a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn't anything urgent and nobody else had complained, so it kept getting pushed down my list. Once Alex mentioned it, though, I figured it was finally time to fix the darn thing.
Normally, when you click on one of your comment notifications, the website automatically takes you down toward the end of the thread so you don't have to scroll through a bunch of comments you've already read. Apparently, one of the other changes I made to the site a few weeks ago interfered with that feature and stopped it from working properly. I'd noticed it myself, but like so many little website annoyances, it remained firmly in the "I'll get to that later" pile until yesterday.
So I took a few minutes today and fixed it. And, as usually happens when I start tinkering with something, I made it better while I was in there.
Now, when you're logged in and you follow a notification to a comment thread, the website doesn't just dump you near the bottom. It remembers which comments you've already seen and takes you directly to the first comment you haven't seen yet. All of the new comments you haven't seen will also show up with a light blue background, so you can immediately tell where the new stuff starts.
I've actually had this color-coding feature for myself for quite a while. It was one of those things I built months ago, thought, "Hey, this is really neat," and then never got around to finishing and releasing for everybody else. Today I finally opened it up so everyone who's logged in can benefit from it too. So that's today's little website improvement.
I've spent most of the past week putting out internal fires around here, which is why you've seen nothing but video quizzes from me instead of the usual new lessons. There have been some technical problems, some personal problems, some Ferengi problems, a couple of Klingon problems... you know, the usual. It's just been one of those weeks where every time you put out one fire, three more appear. They're like tribbles.
Fortunately, I think I've got just about everything stabilized now. I haven't forgotten about Quick Queries, and I haven't forgotten about last week's TechHelp video either. I'm still working on both, and I'm hoping to get them out today, or tomorrow at the latest.
Tomorrow here in the States is Labor Day, so I know a lot of you have the day off. I'm planning to use the holiday to get caught up myself. I mean, what's more American than working on Labor Day, right? LOL.
That's what's new in my world. How's everybody else doing? Got anything fun planned for Labor Day?
For those of you up north, Labor Day always seemed to mark the unofficial end of summer. I used to dread that when I lived in Buffalo because you knew what was coming next. And those of you who know me know I absolutely hate winter. Down here in Florida, though, it's pretty much another sunshiny day in paradise. This time of year, mornings are usually beautiful, then we get the occasional afternoon pop-up shower, and before long the sun is back out again. Our "rainy season" hasn't even seemed particularly rainy this year. Thanks, El Nino. No hurricanes, too. Fingers crossed.
So that's the latest from me. The fires are mostly out, the Tribbles are mostly loaded onto the transporter pad (mostly), and your comment notifications should now take you exactly where you need to go. Not a bad day's work.
As a deligent reader of most of the Forum threads, I am really thankful for the two new updates to the notification of a comment thread about remembering which comments I have already seen and taking me to the first unread comment, and the color coding feature. This IS really neat! Yay! Thank you!

Richard, be careful with transporting tribbles. Make sure you manually clear the pattern buffer after each transport. Star Fleet Engineering has received several reports about transporters going into "transporter replication" loops. The current theory is that something about the tribble physiology sometimes interferes with the Heisenberg compensators causing "copies" of the tribbles to appear on the transporter pad. Sort of like getting multiple Rikers, but in this case it continues until the transporters are shut down and the pattern buffers are manually cleared. Star Fleet Medical is also investigating. What was thought of as a high reproduction rate may be a quantum "doubling" instead. More to follow....
