Microsoft released Data API builder 2.1.5 on October 1, adding support for SQL's native JSON and vector columns through REST and GraphQL APIs. Applications can now read and write these values through the same configured entities and permissions used for ordinary database records.
JSON columns support create, read, update and delete operations, with matching API descriptions. Vector columns let applications exchange the numeric embeddings used for AI similarity search. These features apply when the underlying SQL database supports the corresponding data types.
The release also introduces a NuGet package for embedding the engine in .NET applications and strengthens authorization checks. Improvements include restricting AI-agent schema visibility to the caller's permissions and checking column permissions when GraphQL requests sort data.
