Bob Ward announced the public preview of sqlsimtools on October 14. This free, open-source toolkit simulates concurrent SQL workloads for SQL Server 2019, 2022 and 2025, Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL database in Microsoft Fabric.
Developers can run queries and scripts under load, replay captured SQL Server activity, and compare performance before and after changes. The suite includes the native ODBC-based sqlsim engine, the Python-based sqlpysim engine, and sqlsim Studio, a local browser interface for configuring and monitoring tests.
The command-line tools are available in public preview for Windows and Ubuntu; Studio's public preview is currently Windows x64. Other platform combinations remain in private preview. This is an open-source project provided as-is, rather than an official Microsoft product covered by commercial support.
