OpenAI has started rolling out a beta that lets eligible ChatGPT Pro users in the United States text their dot, rather than opening ChatGPT for every exchange. Android users can use RCS, and the dot can also send proactive updates to its owner.
The texting conversation shares the dot's memory and connected plugins with the ChatGPT app, so context carries over between the two. OpenAI says the dot can text only its owner, only that owner can text it, and this feature does not give the dot or OpenAI access to other text conversations.
This is a limited beta rollout, not availability for every plan or country. Eligible users can look for Texting in their dot's profile; Android requires RCS to be enabled. OpenAI uses third-party provider Linq to send and receive these messages. See the October 28 announcement in the ChatGPT release notes.
