I am writing a dissertation proposal and need help in inserting page numbers.  What steps do you follow in Microsoft Word 2007 to insert numbers so that 1 appears at the top right hand corner of the third page, 2 appears at the top right hand corner of the fourth page, etc.? I am used to using a header and page insert so that 1 appears at the top right hand corner of the first page, 2 appears at the top right hand corner of the second page, etc.

If you want to start numbering the third page as page 1, follow these steps:

Put your cursor on the bottom of page two. Go to Page Layout > Breaks > Section Break > New Page.

Now you've got two distinct sections that can be numbered separately. Doubleclick on the header section of Page 3. Turn OFF the "Link to Previous" button in the Header & Footer Tools > Design tab, Navigation section.

Now insert your page numbers. You'll see that page 3 still gets a "3". Go to Page Number > Format > Start at 1.

That should do it. There might actually be an EASIER way to do this in Word 2007, but I'm still used to the old style method in Word 2003 and before so I still use section breaks.
