Any Linux Fans Here

A combination of my hatred of what windows has become, the Linux distro on the new steam deck and Ricks recent video on the deprecation of individual windows on the task bar (Never Combine), I have finally decided its time for something different. Ive been doing non stop research all weekend and found thousands of people who have moved over in the past 2 years. Not a single one looking back.

Like access, the initial learning curve can be a little bit steep and seeing all the different flavours can be daunting. On doing research, I found a professional YouTuber who talks about it really simply. Ive not been asked to post this and Im not compensated at all but, just like with Rick, I come across something really good, I have to share. If you hate windows as much as I do and considering a change, do check out his channel Chris Titus

I love the fact that you get a simple, barebones OS, with none of the bloat ware and BS that comes with windows. Since its my first go at Linux, Im opting for Linux Mint with Cinnamon Desktop Experience (See Link Above). It looks surprisingly similar to windows but much much simpler and better. A very easy and straight forward installation too.

Linux has really kicked off in popularity in recent years and supports almost everything out there. Including heavy gaming! The biggest problem I see is Microsoft office, but there are ways around that.

Again, not trying to push anything. Im interested to see if there are like minded individuals out there. My personal opinion is that Windows has been in rapid decline both in usability and popularity ever since Bill Gates retired and was replaced by Steve Bulmer.

Let me know your thoughts

I've been kicking around the idea of setting up a Linux box for YEAAARRRSSSS... but I've never found the time. I played with an old version back around like 2005 or so. Let me know what you come up with.

And hey... if you feel like putting together some Linux tutorials, let me know. I'd be happy to list em. :)

Thanks Rick. Figured if Alex can be your Mac guy, I can be your Linux guy! Quite a team!!

I played with Linux years ago when Ubuntu was new. Since then, it's become so much more user friendly. Mint with Cinnamon DE is especially recommended to people coming over from windows. I'll look forward to trying different ones out. Cheers!

I dual booted Ubuntu a few years back, took me back to my uni days.
Have you tried WSL on Windows?

I never heard of it. Seems to be the idea of running a Linux environment inside of windows. Can't see the benefit if I'm honest. I seriously wanted to put Windows in the garbage where it belongs.

With regards to Ubuntu, I was the same. College days, curious etc tho I never dual booted , I just ran off a live cd. I was blown away by that capability. Having done my research this weekend, Linux has come a long way since those days and is becoming a serious contender for the average home user! From what I can see, mint offers the 'closest to windows' experience and least amount of terminal knowledge required with everything working right out the box.

I just can't get over how clean and simple it is. There's a lot more customisability too. I was able to go into panel edit mode (Equivalent to windows task bar) and swap everything around to suit me. If I get time tomorrow at work, I might set up a dual boot on my workstation. Best way to get to know it is to use it as much as possible.
