Is the subform ever not open if the main form is open? If you open/turn on the subform with a button or something, if nothing else you can use an invisible check box that gets marked when you open the subform that is on the main form, then just do
If Forms!Main_F!InvisibleCheckbox=True Then Msgbox "Yes"
