Community Edition is free so it is perfect for learning.

kevin, thanks, i have the visual studio installed.  What is the added value of visual studio and access?  Can use these together or what use does it have in access that I'm going to spend my time on this.

Hi Ludwig, Visual Studio is a general-purpose app creator, whereas Access is specially made for apps that revolve around databases.  

For Windows desktop apps, VS lets you create stand-alone executable files, which Access can't do.  

VS can create web apps and mobile apps too, whereas Access can only work in Windows desktop.

To add to what Kevin Yip said:

You can connect to your Access database (as well as other DB applications, such as SQL Server) using VB.NET to view, add, edit and delete records (basic DB programming).
