Bobby, there are a lot of things you can do to clean up hard drive space. You can begin by running a Windows Disk Cleanup. You didn't say which version of Windows you're using, but in most versions of Windows (2000, XP, and I think Vista - I don't have it running right now) you can right-click on your drive, go to PROPERTIES, and then click on the DISK CLEANUP button. That will go through and remove some of the junk that build up over time, compress old files that you're not using, etc.

I also recommend you go through an UNINSTALL any programs you're not using. If you're like me, you sometimes install software that you intend to use, but never get around to. Just uninstall it. You can always put it back later.

Aside from that, 3 GB isn't bad for free space on a laptop. That's certainly enough room for working on normal stuff (Word and Excel, web browsing, etc.) Unless you're working with large files, images, games, etc. you should be OK. Of course, hard drives are pretty inexpensive now days. You could always look at upgrading. :)

Now, as an advanced tip, you could open up your Windows Explorer and delete anything on your C: drive that you KNOW (and you're CERTAIN) is not needed. Anything, for example, in a folder named TEMP is usually safe to delete. Be careful, however. My wife deleted some files in her BOOT folder by accident and I had to reinstall Vista on her machine. :)
