Microsoft Word 365 is updating its default paste option to "Merge Formatting" for text copied from other programs, replacing the previous default of "Keep Source Formatting." This change aims to make pasted content match the current document's formatting, which is more practical for most users. However, Microsoft's explanation of the change has caused some confusion, as the message inaccurately states that it affects content copied from outside the current document, when it only applies to content from other programs. The new default can be adjusted in the settings and currently applies to Insiders Word 365 for Windows, with plans to extend to broader releases.
