Delta Screwed the Pooch
Richard Rost

Delta really screwed the pooch. Now I won't be home until Friday.

Let's see... Delta canceled our Sunday flight out of Wichita and said they couldn't get us to Atlanta until Wednesday. But they said we could drive 3 hours to KC and fly to ATL from there. Ok. So we rented a car and drove to KC. That flight was delayed but eventually got us to ATL.

Our flight home to Fort Myers was delayed... Delayed... Delayed... And then canceled. So we sat around in the airport from 6pm-ish until after 2am only to be told sorry, flight's canceled.

All of the hotels within a 5 to 10 minute Uber ride are booked solid. Found one in downtown Atlanta about 15 minutes away. Ubers are slammed so a normal $30 ride cost $100. Talk about price gouging... Oh... I mean "surge pricing."

Oh. And even though many Airbnb's do have instant booking and automatic checkin, the app doesn't allow you to pick RIGHT NOW as a checkin time and if it's after midnight it assumes a 3pm checkin later that day. Horrible missed opportunity for Airbnb owners.

The customer service line for delta at the airport was literally 200 feet long. I've never seen that before. So I said to hell with it... I'll handle it online. Chatted with a support rep (which it took me 2 hours to get online with) and the next available flight is on Thursday evening at 11pm.

WTF delta? I've always defended you as the best airline, but you really screwed this one up. This is the worst series of delays I've ever seen.

So... Looks like I'll be home Friday after midnight now. Sorry if there aren't any videos ready for the next couple days. I wasn't expecting this at all.

We even thought of renting a car and driving home, but with breaks you're talking like 10 to 12 hours. No thanks.

OK. Time for some sleep.

So too far to walk then? 🤣

I hope the airline offers compensation for all the delays and cancelations.

Delta is all over the news, being the airline that is taking the longest to recover (due to their crew tracking system not functioning), and prompting the department of transportation to investigate.

Mandy: why? Did you push the faulty Crowdstrike update? Lol.

KR: I actually googled that. 9 days. If you don't rest. Lol.

KY: Yeah, and I've always been very loyal to Delta because they NEVER have these problems.

You could go see the whale sharks at the aquarium while you're in Atlanta.

Ooooohhhh... not a bad idea. I wonder if they have penguins? That's the whole reason we're on this trip in the first place. We went to Wichita to swim with penguins. :)

I prefer Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks and Great Whites.
Always wanted to swim with Great Whites.

@Kevin R. I was diving in the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. About thirty feet down trying to haul a big lobster out of his hole. A shadow passed by, happens a lot with a sea lion or my dad hovering over me. But this shadow lasted a bit too long, I turned and looked behind me to see the second half of a great white floating past, probably about 20 feet long and 20 feet away. I know they attack surfers as they fit the upward looking profile of a sea lion. I looked back at my wet suit, all dark in the water, and my big fins. Gulp.

Listening to all the fun you are having make me glad I'm an ole home body.  Nearly takes a stick of dynomite or an empty refrigerator to get me to go anywhere. My husband always liked to travel, and we took a few trips before the cancer took him from me. Never did make it on an Alaska cruise ship like we wanted though. I think I would have like that a lot.

Anyway, here's hoping there's no more delays and you can make it home on Friday.  Be safe.

Sorry to hear about your husband. I took an Alaska cruise back in 2015. It was nice. Flew into Fairbanks and you take a glass-top train down to Anchorage. Get on a cruise ship. See the glaciers. Ended in Vancouver. Flew home. It was a fun trip. And I got to play with Alaskan Huskies and eat real fresh salmon and crab. Saw Denali too. Beautiful. I'm all about the food on vacations. Lol. Never too late for you to go!

No commentary from Richard, must be on a plane, or waiting in the terminal for one (without wifi).

That's exhausting. I'm thinking you should probably sleep for a day or two when you finally get home.

We got to see the penguins! Very small habitat but they were still cool. I'm spoiled now that I got to swim with them last week. LOL.

OK... Heading to the airport in 2 hours.

Did you bring any penguins home with you? Glad you finally made it home. Never understood why you didn't just transport home

You know, if I were a billionaire, I would definitely set up a penguin habitat of my own (complete with trainers who know what they're doing). I love penguins - especially African Penguins, which are the kind pictured above; the kind we swam with in Kansas. They're so adorable. Sure, Emperor Penguins are the ones most people are familiar with - and they're adorable too - but Africans are like little puppies. I played with them and even held one in my arms in the pool and he was just so cool. If you like penguins, I recommend watching Penguin Town on Netflix. I laughed and cried through the whole series.

It really was. If anyone else is interested, it's the Tanganyika Wildlife Park near Wichita, Kansas. It's the only place in the US where you can actually swim with penguins.

My next penguin excursion is going to be to South Africa where the penguins actually waddle throughout the town (watch Penguin Town for details).

Sandra: you're in Arkansas, right? You're only about a 6 hour drive from Wichita. You can definitely go! I had to fly there from Southwest Florida. :)

Update on this... Delta finally reimbursed me for the hotel rooms and rental car. They didn't cover everything, like Ubers and food, but it's better than nothing.
