Intro In this lesson, you will learn how to crop and rotate images, manage contrast and color, use the dodge and saturate tools, apply unsharp and filter effects, and work with selections and duplication in Adobe Photoshop 7. We will cover nudging, transforming, flipping, skewing, and adding perspective to images, as well as spend more time on the magnetic lasso, the magic wand, and the eraser tool. This class builds on techniques from Photoshop 101 and is designed for those with a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Photoshop. This is lesson 2.
Transcript Welcome to Photoshop 102 using Photoshop, brought to you by 599CD.com. I am your instructor, Richard Rost.

Today we are going to be expanding on a lot of the techniques we taught you in Photoshop 101, as well as learning some new techniques. We are going to teach you how to crop and rotate your images. We are going to learn about contrast and color management to make your pictures look not so tempting. We are going to learn about dodge and saturate tools, the unsharp and filter. We will do a lot more selections and duplicating your selections.

We will teach you how to nudge, transform, flip, rotate, skew, and use perspective, along with a bunch of other neat stuff. We will spend a lot more time with the magnetic lasso, so you can change the frequency of the drop points and your own. We will spend some more time with the magic wand and how to use the magic wand to select items other than what you want. We will teach you how to use the eraser tool.

For your prerequisites, of course, you should have taken Photoshop 101 before taking this class. If not, we are going to assume you have a basic working knowledge of Photoshop 101, but we do cover a lot of good fundamentals in that class. Even if you are an experienced Photoshop user, you might want to pick up a copy of Photoshop 101 just to review some of the basics before continuing on with this class.

In this class, we are using Adobe Photoshop 7. However, from what we have seen, most of the examples in this class work just fine for some earlier versions of Photoshop, as well as Photoshop Elements. Also, the version of Windows that you are using does not matter.

How to learn:

We strongly recommend that you watch each lesson completely through, and then watch it again, following along on your computer as you go. Open up the video window in one corner of your screen, and open up Photoshop in the other corner of your screen. Hopefully, your screen is pretty big. Watch the lesson once completely through; each lesson is about 10 minutes long, and then watch it again following along with the examples.

You will get much more out of it if you watch it once completely through and then watch it again following along with the examples. It is similar to picking out more details when you watch a movie the second time. Watch it once, get a feel for what we are doing, and then go through it again, following along with the examples.

We have a class website set up for this class: 599cd.com/Photoshop/102. The sample images and other files from this class can be found on that page just for you. The sample files that we are going to be using in class are also going to be found on your hard drive. Assuming that your program files folder is on your C drive, you will find them in the Program Files, 599CD, Photoshop 102, Help Sample Files folder. If you need help navigating through your Windows Explorer or your My Computer, we recommend you pick up one of our Windows Basics courses where we teach basic file navigation. You can also browse to that folder using the Photoshop file browser. You can also get to that folder by clicking on the help icon on the 599CD video player. If you cannot find the sample files on your hard drive, you can also get them off our website.

Thanks for watching.

Summary Today's video from Photoshop Learning Zone builds on the foundational skills covered in Photoshop 101 and introduces a range of new techniques to help you work more efficiently in Adobe Photoshop. In this course, I guide you through essential methods such as cropping and rotating images, making adjustments to contrast and color management to enhance your photos, and exploring tools like dodge, saturate, unsharp, and various filters to further refine your pictures.

We spend time learning advanced selection techniques, including duplicating selections, nudging, transforming, flipping, rotating, skewing, and working with perspective. Special attention is given to the magnetic lasso tool, allowing customization of drop point frequency, as well as expanded uses for the magic wand selection tool. The eraser tool and its effective applications are also discussed.

To get the most from this course, you should already have completed Photoshop 101 or possess a similar level of working knowledge, since we build on the basics established there. Even if you have previous Photoshop experience, revisiting the fundamentals in the first course can be helpful before starting Photoshop 102.

We are using Adobe Photoshop 7 for all demonstrations, but almost everything shown applies to earlier versions and Photoshop Elements. You do not need to worry about your version of Windows, as it will not affect the instruction.

For the best learning experience, I recommend first watching each lesson in its entirety. Afterwards, view it again while following along in Photoshop on your own computer. Keeping the lesson window open alongside your Photoshop workspace allows you to pause, rewind, and really absorb the material. This method allows you to catch extra details, just like rewatching a movie helps you notice things you might have missed the first time.

All sample images and files used throughout the course are available on the class website. You will also find these files in a designated folder on your hard drive, usually located within Program Files in a 599CD folder under Photoshop 102, inside Help Sample Files. If you are unfamiliar with navigating Windows files and directories, consider reviewing our Windows Basics courses to strengthen your file management skills. Alternatively, you can use Photoshop's file browser to reach this folder. If, for any reason, you are unable to locate the sample files locally, they are always available for download on our website.
