A Day to Reflect on Leadership, History, and Progress

 S  M  L  XL  FS  |  Slo  Reg  Fast  2x  |  Bookmark

Hey everyone, it's Richard Rost with Computer Learning Zone. Today is President's Day here in the U.S. and some of you might be wondering why we celebrate this holiday. Well, originally it was created in 1885 to honor George Washington's birthday, which is February 22nd. But in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the third Monday in February. Why? To give us more long weekends of course and to make sure no one gets a case of the Mondays.

President's Day was meant to honor not just George Washington but all US presidents especially Abraham Lincoln whose birthday is February 12th. Now over time President's Day has evolved into a holiday where we celebrate the office of the president even if you don't always agree with the current one, it's a moment to reflect on leadership, history, and progress.

Oh, and also to get some great President's Day sales! Need a mattress or a TV? This is your weekend! But just to be clear, this is not an advertisement for a sale. I don't do a President's Day sale. I do one sale every year and it's for Cyber Monday. So if you missed it, you missed it. You'll have to wait till November. I don't try to capitalize on every holiday like some other people do.

So today isn't just about shopping. It's about taking a step back and remembering what good leadership looks like. In fact I'd like to take a moment to honor one of the greatest presidents of all time past present or future. Can you guess who? That's right, the first president of the United Federation of Planets, Jonathan Archer. Archer was a pioneer, a true explorer who led humanity into a new era of peace and cooperation across the galaxy. Without him, there would be no Federation. He believed in unity, diplomacy, and doing the right thing, even when it was hard. Come on, you knew I had to go here.

But seriously folks, while you're enjoying your long weekend, for those of you who get one, maybe take a moment to think about the kind of leadership we should aspire to, both here on Earth and out there among the stars.

Happy President's Day everyone.

LLAP
Richard

P.S. Before all the grammar police chime in, if you're celebrating the Office of the President, "President's Day" (singular possessive) can be used. It's referring to the day honoring the position itself, not multiple individual presidents. So, while "Presidents' Day" is also used, "President's Day" makes sense in this context. Plus I already recorded the video with "President's Day" on the slides - so I have to justify it. LOL.

Today is President's Day here in the US, and some of you might be wondering why we celebrate this holiday. Originally, it was created in 1885 to honor George Washington's birthday, which is February 22. But in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved it to the 3rd Monday in February. Why? Over time, President's Day has evolved into a holiday where we celebrate the office of the President, even if you do not always agree with the current one. It is a moment to reflect on leadership, history, and progress.

Summary Today is President's Day here in the United States, and you might be curious about the origins behind this holiday. President's Day actually began back in 1885 as a way to recognize George Washington's birthday, which falls on February 22. However, in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted the holiday to the third Monday in February to create more three-day weekends for everyone, helping people avoid the dreaded start-of-the-week slump.

Originally, the holiday was meant to commemorate not only George Washington but all US presidents, particularly Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is February 12. Over time, President's Day has evolved into an occasion where we celebrate the entire institution of the presidency. The day offers a chance to reflect on our nation's leadership, history, and progress, regardless of personal opinions about whoever currently holds the office.

Of course, many people associate President's Day with big holiday sales. If you need a new mattress or TV, this weekend is known for some pretty impressive deals. Just to set the record straight, though, I do not run any President's Day sales myself. I only have one major sale each year on Cyber Monday, so if you were hoping for a deal, you will have to wait until November. I do not jump on every holiday for promotional opportunities like some businesses do.

Beyond the shopping, I think today is about more than just getting good deals. President's Day gives us an opportunity to pause and consider what strong leadership means. On that note, I always like to give a little shout out to one of the greatest presidents of all time - not just in our history, but in the future as well. Yes, that's right, I am talking about Jonathan Archer, the first President of the United Federation of Planets.

Archer stood out as a leader, someone who pushed humanity into a future defined by unity and cooperation throughout the galaxy. Without his vision and courage, there would never have been a United Federation of Planets. He modeled principles like diplomacy, unity, and the strength to do what is right, even when it is difficult.

All jokes aside, as you enjoy the long weekend, if you have the day off, take a moment to think about the qualities we want in our leaders - the kind that set a good example for generations to come, whether on Earth or somewhere far beyond.

I hope you all have a wonderful President's Day. Live long and prosper, my friends.
