Port Forwarding
Selby

Dear Richard, I am trying to Portforward my router to control another computer over the internet. Would it possible for you do a seminar on the Subject. I have looked everywhere and really lost all the way. Think that there would be a lot of people in my position. I mainly concentrate on Access and Excel from your site. Would really really appreciate a lesson on the subject. The reason for this is that Mum has a new computer and she does not understand it, she does not like Technology, I could perhaps open an internet page for her (To See the lastest news) from my computer and help her out.  Regards Selby

p.s. Sorry to be long winded, I know your very busy.

Reply from Richard Rost:

This would be hard for me to make a tutorial on because EVERY router type is different. I've had routers from D-Link, Cisco, Linksys, and more and all of them have different configuration software.

Personally, I use a program called TightVNC to control my computers when I'm away. It runs as a little service in the background (which you can install on mom's computer and she won't even know it's there). It has complete instructions on how to set it up. You just have to forward one port on your router to mom's IP address. This means you have to (a) set up a STATIC IP address on her computer, and then (b) go into the router config tool and forward traffic on that port to her IP address. On my Linksys E3000 router I go to Applications & Gaming, Single Port Forwarding, set the External Port and Internal Port to the same thing (I think the default is 5900, but you can configure it in TightVNC), set Protocol to Both, and then specify her IP address.

That's it in a nutshell.
