Microsoft has made direct remote-PC connections generally available in Windows App for Windows. The feature is included in version 2.0.1482.0, released October 6, according to Microsoft's release notes. Updates roll out in stages, so availability can vary.

Users can add a PC by name or IP address, save connections, pin favorites, and adjust display and local-resource settings. A work or school account is not required for these direct PC connections, although users still need an account authorized to sign in to the remote computer.

For Access users, this provides another way to operate an existing database on a remote Windows PC. Access continues running on that PC while the other computer displays and controls its desktop session. The host must stay powered on, be reachable over the network, and have Remote Desktop enabled. Windows Home can connect as a client but cannot host these connections; see Microsoft's host requirements.
