Microsoft announced a redesigned Photos app for Windows 11 on October 15, with a new Gallery, rebuilt editor and updated image viewer. The update is rolling out first to Windows Insiders; Microsoft plans broader availability later this year, so these changes are not yet a general release.

The editor adds HDR-preserving editing and the ability to edit and save HEIC and WebP images in their original formats. Its tools cover cropping, color and lighting adjustments, object removal and styling. Microsoft also says Relight, which lets users reposition virtual lights in a photo, is expanding to all Windows 11 devices.

The Gallery offers albums, people filters and natural-language photo searches. Local pictures can still be used without signing in to OneDrive. The redesigned viewer adds SVG support and keeps image information and common actions close at hand.
