time clock

Every time I turn on the comouter it has a different time at the bottom. I have to set the right time every time I turn on the computer. How do I get it to keep the right time.

Answer from Richard Rost:

If your clock is radically different every time you turn it on, it could be due to a dead CMOS battery.

There is a little battery (usually a watch battery) that sits on your motherboard that keeps some settings active for you all the time. One of the things this little battery maintains is the current date and time. If this battery dies, then your clock will reset every time you turn the computer on.

Now, usually the DATE on your PC will be way off too… so if the computer is going back to, say, 1990 Jan 1, or something like that, then you know for a fact this is the case.

Of course, this is just one possible solution. Your computer could be getting updates from a time server on the Web that is wrong. I'd have to look at your PC to tell you for sure what the problem is.
