Deep-cleaning C:
Dan

Hello Richard.

It seems that no matter how much I keep enlarging my C: drive, with Vista no size seems big enough. Now, at 28GB, it seems I must repartition again. As that is always a risk (it failed, once, so necessitating a complete reload) I would rather not do it--so I am looking for things to dump.

The first thing I have my sights on are Vista's sample .dvr-ms files but which, despite qualifying as garbade in my book, absolutely refuse to be removed.

Any hints on that?

Any hints on any other such garbage that I can delete (but which are--like the dvr-ms files--ignored by Windows' cleanup facility?

thanks,

Dan

Answer from Richard Rost:

28 GB ??? Wow.

Why don't you just use multiple partitions? Personally, I prefer the following setup:

C: Windows and crucial apps ONLY
D: Applications
E: My Data
F: Backup and Storage (external, usually)

With this in mind, your C: drive/partition really only needs to be about 10 GB and should never get much larger than that. If you need more space in the future, you just add more space.

Personally, I love external hard drive docks like this one:

You never run out of hard drive space.
