Deleting User Profiles
Brian

When I bought my Dell Latitude the technician demonstrating it created and account called 'user' just to show how it worked. I've since created my own account with my own name, but I don't see this in the list of users (when I boot up, I am offered my own account and a guest account I've created - 'User' doesn't appear on the welcome screen). But 'User' seems to dominate everything - some folders I can't access. I'd like to get rid of 'User' but am scared of blocking access to all the folders I've created under my own account, which seems to still save things as 'User'. How can I delete 'User' safely, make sure that I have access to everything on my computer, and not block myself from any folders?

Answer from Richard Rost:

The first account created during Windows setup becomes your de facto "admin" user. I would set up a new user account in the Control Panel and make sure to give your new account administrator rights. Then DISABLE (don't delete) the User account. This way if you DO find that you need something in that account later, you can always re-enable it and go back in to get what you need.
