low virtual memory
Tom

I use my 2000 machine because it's so much faster than my identical XP machine. But recently I get these messages that I'm low on virtual memory. I do know something about CMOS, setup, etc, but can't find out how to expand virtual memory. I hope you can help, because I'm not really sure what it is. I'm a dinosaur. Thanks.

Answer from Richard Rost:

Virtual memory allows your computer to take a chunk of hard drive space and treat it as system memory. It's also called a "swap" or "paging" file.

In Windows 2000, right-click on My Computer and go to Properties. Click Advanced. Click Performance Options. In the Virtual Memory section, click Change.

You'll see the paging file size for each of your drives. I recommend setting up a paging file of anywhere between 500 MB and 2 GB per partition which should be fine for Windows 2000… but if your system is telling you need more, then make it larger, but don't go TOO big. Your system can actually slow down if your paging file is too large (and it wastes space on your drive).
