I have two machines running windows 7.  On one, the desktop icons have a little box in the upper lefthand corner where I can put a checkmark.  The other doesn't have this.  Where does this setting live?  Thank you.

Open up Windows Explorer. Go to Tools > Options. On the VIEW tab, find "use check boxes to select items." That turns those check boxes on and off. It just allows you to select multiple items without having to use the keyboard.
