Windows 7 or 8

Lee asks... I would like your opinion. My desktop PC is 8 years old and I have WIN XP. It's time to get a new one (getting the blue screen a lot lately) and am trying to decide if it would be better to get the WIN 7 version or wait for WIN 8 coming out in fall. I've heard good things about Win7 and even if Win8 is better, am told there will be lots of bugs to iron out the first year. Plus I don't care about the Win8 touch screen features I've heard about. On the other hand, if I got Win7, it would soon be 'obsolete' but I'm still leaning towards Win7. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks.

My response... I've always been very slow to upgrade to the latest version of programs FOR MY BUSINESS PCs. I don't want bugs in new software to effect my business operation. Heck, three of the four computers on my desk still run Windows 2000. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My 4th PC, however, gets all the new toys as soon as they're available because "that's what I do for a living" and I need to stay current.

With that being said, I would suggest going with whatever OS is on your new PC when you get it. If it's Windows 7, that's great. In fact, they'll probably give you free upgrade to Windows 8. I bought a new laptop that had Vista on it about 3 months before 7 was released, and it came with the free upgrade option.

If your new PC comes loaded with Windows 8, that's great too. MOST of the problems that people experience with new OS versions are because folks are loading them onto OLD PCs. When you take a 3 year old PC and try to put Windows 8 on it, of course you might run into problems. Microsoft very extensively tests new versions of Windows before release... generally on NEW computers. Your new PC will most likely run Windows 8 just fine.

And if you don't like the new "Metro" style (the touch-screen oriented look that Windows Phone has which bled over into Windows 8) then you can turn it off and make your PC look and feel just like Windows 7.... just like I take Windows 7 and make it "look like" Windows XP because I like the OLD style Task Bar with the Quick Launch buttons and such.

Just go with what they give you. You'll be fine. :)
