Intro In this lesson, you will learn about working with layers and masks in Adobe Photoshop 7. We will cover how to create, rename, color, hide, resize, and change opacity for layers, as well as techniques for using masks, including quick masks and saving masks to channels. This lesson builds on what was covered in Photoshop 101 and 102, with a focus on helping you manage and edit different parts of your images efficiently. This is lesson 103.
Transcript Welcome to Photoshop 103 using Photoshop, brought to you by 599c.com. I am your instructor Richard Rost.

In today's class, we are going to spend our time learning about two major topics: layers and masks. Layers allow you to create images and stack them one atop the other, almost as if on transparent pieces of paper, so you can work with individual components of your images at different times.

Masks allow you to isolate certain sections of your images so you can do transformations and edits on just certain sections without affecting the entire image.

We are going to learn lots of different techniques like creating multiple layers, renaming them, coloring them, hiding layers, resizing layers, changing their opacity and luminosity, and so on. We are also going to learn various techniques with masks, such as how to create a quick mask, how to save a mask to its channel, and more.

As prerequisites, we recommend that you take our Photoshop 101 and Photoshop 102 courses before continuing with this course. This course will build on a lot of the topics and techniques we learned in those two classes, and we strongly recommend taking those first.

In this class, we are using Adobe Photoshop 7 and Windows XP. However, the majority of topics are valid for most versions of Photoshop, as well as most versions of Windows.

We recommend you watch each lesson completely through once to see what we are going to be covering in the lesson. Then, go back through the lesson, watching it again, pausing it as needed, and following along in Photoshop on your own.

We have a class website, 599CD.com/Photoshop/103. You will find some of the sample images that we are going to be using in today's class on that page. We did not include them on the CD or with the download file because one of them is very large, but you can download them off our website.

We are also going to use some of the sample images that came with Photoshop. You can find them in the Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop 7.0 > Samples folder. We showed you how to find this in the first Photoshop class.

Of course, the most important lesson of all is to have fun. Photoshop is a fun program to work with. Make sure that you are working on something that you enjoy doing while you are learning Photoshop, so it is not work, it is enjoyment.

Summary Today's video from Photoshop Learning Zone focuses on a couple of the most important concepts you'll encounter when working in Photoshop: layers and masks. As your instructor, my goal is to help you understand how these tools work so that you can harness their full potential in your own creative projects.

Layers make it possible to build up your images by stacking individual elements on top of each other, much like layering transparent sheets of paper. This approach gives you a lot of flexibility because you can manipulate different parts of your project separately, without affecting the rest of the image.

Masks, on the other hand, provide a way to focus your changes on specific areas of an image. By isolating certain sections, you can transform or edit one part of your picture without impacting the entire composition.

Throughout this class, we will look at a variety of techniques related to both layers and masks. I will show you how to create multiple layers, give them different names, change their colors, hide layers, resize them, and adjust properties like opacity and brightness. We will also go over several mask-related tasks, including creating a quick mask and saving a mask to its own channel.

It is important that you have a solid foundation before starting this course. I highly recommend completing Photoshop 101 and Photoshop 102, as this lesson builds on the tools, terms, and techniques covered in those previous sessions.

For this class, I am using Adobe Photoshop 7 running on Windows XP. However, the information and methods I demonstrate here will generally apply to most versions of Photoshop and Windows.

My advice is to watch each segment of the lesson all the way through to get an overview of the process. Then, go back and re-watch it while using your own copy of Photoshop so you can follow the steps at your own pace.

To help reinforce your learning, I have provided sample images that we'll be using during this session. You can find these images on the course website at 599CD.com under the Photoshop 103 section. We did not include these files on the CD or with any download because one of the images is quite large, but you can always download it from the website. In addition, some sample images that come with Photoshop can be found in your Program Files under Adobe, then within the Photoshop 7.0 Samples folder. If you are not sure where this is located, we covered it in the first Photoshop course.

Finally, the most important thing to remember is to enjoy yourself while you learn. Photoshop is a powerful and fun program, and working with images should be as enjoyable as it is educational. Try to work on projects that you find genuinely interesting, so practicing feels less like work and more like play.

You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below. Live long and prosper, my friends.
