SummaryToday's video from the Windows Learning Zone is all about managing your files using Microsoft Windows. I am Richard Rost, and in this class, we will focus on how to handle files and folders efficiently. You'll learn about different file types, how to browse through your computer, and how to use Windows Explorer for file management tasks. We will explore the Windows folder hierarchy, so you'll become comfortable with drive letters and how they relate to your computer's structure. I'll explain what file extensions are, cover some of the most common ones, and share important tips for virus prevention to help keep your files safe. I'll guide you through creating new files with programs like WordPad, and we'll cover how to save copies of your files. You'll see the steps for opening files in Windows Explorer, as well as methods for copying, pasting, cutting, and deleting files. I'll also show you how to recover files that have been deleted using the Recycle Bin. Creating and managing folders is another key topic – we'll look at creating folders, copying and moving them, and dragging files and folders between different locations. We'll go over different settings and viewing options in Windows Explorer to help you customize your workflow. I'll teach you how to create shortcuts to files and folders, set up folders on your desktop, and go over the features of the Recycle Bin in detail. Before starting this class, I recommend you have completed Windows 101, which provides a solid foundation regardless of your Windows version. It is also helpful to have taken either Windows 102 or Windows 110. If you are using Windows XP, Windows 110 is best. For earlier operating systems like Windows 98, 95, or 2000, Windows 102 will be more appropriate. Even though I will be using Windows XP for the demonstrations, these file and folder management techniques apply broadly to all versions of Windows. You might notice some cosmetic differences, but the core skills remain consistent throughout the different versions. For the best experience, I suggest you watch each lesson once all the way through, then replay it as you follow along on your own computer. Most importantly, remember to enjoy the process as you learn. You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below.
