Excel World Championship

So apparently there's something called the Microsoft Excel World Championship, and I'm only just now hearing about this. How did I not know this was a thing?

They actually held the event at the HyperX Arena in Las Vegas, complete with an audience, stage lights, and all the pageantry of a real sporting event. Contestants walked through a tunnel like they were entering a UFC match. They had loud announcers, a pumped-up crowd, and they even streamed it on ESPN3. Yes, ESPN. For Excel.

Take that, high school jocks who picked on the computer nerds.

Competitors were given ridiculously complex spreadsheet challenges. One of them was apparently based on World of Warcraft and involved tracking the stats of 20 avatars using some multi-layered logic. These weren't your everyday SUM and VLOOKUP formulas either. We're talking serious logic and puzzle solving. Seven-page instruction booklets. Timed competition. A $5,000 cash prize. And yes, a literal championship belt.

But I have a feeling it was all about bragging rights.

The winner this year was a financial consultant named Michael Jarman. Guy knows his way around a spreadsheet, that's for sure. I guess I'm just blown away that something like this exists and it's got real traction. Not that I'm surprised - Excel is one of the most powerful tools out there. People underestimate it because it looks like a boring old grid. But in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, it's almost like a programming language.

Honestly, watching this reminded me a bit of Spock playing 3D chess. It's not just about understanding the rules. It's about thinking ten steps ahead, using logic, and staying calm under pressure. Replace the chessboard with a spreadsheet and you've got the same kind of mental workout.

So yeah, this has officially been added to my list of nerdy bucket list items. I have no intention of entering, but I'll likely be watching the next one. And for all you Excel nerds out there who think your skills don't get any recognition, just know that somewhere in Vegas, there's a guy holding a championship belt for writing formulas. And that makes me smile.

Now... when is the World Championship for Microsoft Access? Hmm...

Also, it is scary how good AI is getting at image generation now. The two big things before that you could always tell made an image seem AI-generated were that it couldn't get text right and it had problems with hands. It was always the wrong number of fingers or something was always wrong with the hands, but they seem to have ironed those bugs out.

Here's the prompt I used: "Can you please make me a picture in the style of the Excel World Championship, but I'd like to have it themed for Microsoft Access? Show people wearing Access shirts, cheering on, and that kind of thing, in the style of that competition."

And yes, I always say "please" and "thank you" to our soon-to-be AI Overlords. :)

So, I take it they weren't writing VBA code in the Excel World Championship?

Thomas Gonder I have no idea. Didn't read too much about it.

Sami Shamma gee, thanks. :)
