If you are using an older version of Excel, you should visit my website at ExcelLearningZone.com and look for my older tutorials covering Excel 2000 through 2003. This class follows Excel 2007 Basic Level 4. I recommend you take Basic Level 4 before this class but it is not required. We cover charts and data tables in Level 4. This is the Basic Level 5 course for Excel 2007. This class is designed for the novice user who has little or no experience with Excel beyond my Level 1, 2, 3, and 4 classes. Our courses are broken up into four groups: basic, expert, advanced, and developer. Our basic courses are designed for novice users who have little or no experience with Microsoft Excel. You will learn one good method for accomplishing most tasks. We will save all the extraneous details for later classes. Our expert series is designed for users who are already comfortable with Excel. Expert classes will teach you more about the standard features of Excel that most people use from day to day. We will cover all the options, alternatives, shortcuts, tips, and tricks, and really cover all of the features of Excel exhaustively. Our advanced classes are designed to go beyond the expert level and teach you things like recording macros, working with user forms, creating your own templates, and more advanced features that not everyone uses but they really add extra functionality to your spreadsheets. These are the kinds of features reserved for power users to really add extra professionalism to your spreadsheets. Finally, our developer series is designed to teach you how to program in Visual Basic for Applications with Microsoft Excel. This will allow you to create Excel-based programs for your users and to integrate Excel tightly with other applications. Each of our series is broken down into different levels. Each level represents about an hour worth of training. For example, the basic series starts off with Level 1, then is followed by Level 2, 3, and so on. Each level will teach you new and different topics in Microsoft Excel, building on the lessons learned in the previous levels. When you are finished with all the levels in the basic series, you are ready to move up to the expert level series. Now let us take a more detailed look at exactly what is covered in today's class. In lesson 1, we are going to cover Insert Text. We will see how to insert hyperlinks, both email and web hyperlinks, text boxes, WordArt, and signature lines. In lesson 2, we are going to learn how to insert objects and symbols into our spreadsheets. In lesson 3, we are going to learn how to work with the header and footer on our spreadsheet pages. I will show you how to insert a header and footer. We will learn about the three different sections of the header and footer, and we will see how to work with the special codes to insert the page number, the current date, and more. In lesson 4, we are going to take a look at some of the features under the View tab in the Windows section. First we are working with large spreadsheets, like freezing panes and splitting the window. In lesson 5, we are going to learn about borders. I am going to show you how to print gridlines and how to change borders. In lesson 6, we are going to cover some miscellaneous formatting tricks. We are going to see how to merge cells, cover cell orientation, and how to use the Format Painter. You can store additional information in each cell in the form of a comment. In lesson 7, we will learn how to add comments to our spreadsheets. In lesson 8, we are going to learn the basics of the different research tools: the spell checker, the thesaurus, and translate. I am going to show you how to go out to the web inside of Excel and get up-to-date stock quotes. In lesson 9, I am going to teach you how to download templates from Microsoft Office Online. I will show you how to download them. We will take a look at a calendar template, an invoice template, a brief look at a mortgage template, and I will show you how to get in there and explore the whole world of the Office Online Templates. If you need help with Microsoft Excel, you can post your questions in our student forums. If you are watching this course using our custom video player software or online in our theater, then you should see the student forums pop up right next to the video window. Here you will see all the questions and comments that other students have had regarding each lesson, as well as my responses to them. Feel free to join in the discussion and post any questions that you might have. To get the most out of this course, I recommend you sit back, relax, and watch each lesson through completely once without trying to do anything on your computer. Then watch the lesson again a second time, following along with my examples. Actually create the document that I create in class, build the spreadsheet along with me, step by step. If you get stuck or do not understand something, re-watch the video again from the beginning or rewind to any point in the video at which you feel comfortable. Remember, you can always post your questions in the student forums if you really need help. Most importantly, keep an open mind. Learning something new can be confusing at first. If there is something you do not understand at first, that is okay. Just be patient and it will come to you eventually. Try your best, and again if you still have questions, post them in our student forums. Now just sit back and relax and get ready for lesson one. QuizQ1. SummaryToday's video from Excel Learning Zone covers Excel 2007 Basic Level 5. My name is Richard Rost, and in this class, I am going to focus on a group of essential topics that did not quite fit into the earlier lessons in the basic series, but I believe they are important for anyone starting with Excel. We start with text insertion tools. I will walk you through how to add hyperlinks in your spreadsheets, including both web and email links. We'll also look at how to use text boxes, WordArt for decorative text, signature lines for signing documents, and how to work with objects and symbols. Next, we will talk about headers and footers. Here, you will learn how to add headers and footers to your spreadsheets for when you print them. This lets you include features such as automatic page numbers, dates, and other useful information. Working with large spreadsheets can be a challenge, so I will show you different ways to manage big amounts of data. We will look at how to freeze panes so key rows or columns stay visible as you scroll, and how to split a worksheet into two views for easier navigation. Formatting is another key area we address. I will show you how to work with borders to tidy up your data, print gridlines for better readability, and explore several other formatting shortcuts, including Merge and Center, changing cell orientation, and using the Format Painter to copy formatting quickly. I will also introduce you to cell comments. You will learn to add comments for added clarity in your worksheets. In addition, we will go over the research tools built into Excel, like the spell checker, thesaurus, translation feature, and a trick for fetching stock quotes straight from the web. Templates can be a big time saver in Excel, so I will show you how to find and use templates like calendars, invoices, and mortgage calculators from Microsoft Office Online. You will learn how to download and adapt them for your needs. This class is made specifically for Excel 2007, but if you are using an earlier version, I recommend visiting my website where I have tutorials for Excel 2000 through 2003. This course follows Excel 2007 Basic Level 4, and while it's helpful to take Level 4 first, it is not strictly required. Level 4 focuses on charts and data tables, which are not covered in this class. Our Excel courses fall into four main groups: basic, expert, advanced, and developer. The basic series is for those who have little to no Excel experience. Here, we stick to straightforward solutions without adding too many extra details, which we save for later classes. The expert series is for users who are already confident with Excel. These classes go deeper and examine every feature, option, alternative, tip, and shortcut that most users may encounter. Our advanced classes step beyond the expert level, with lessons on recording macros, creating custom templates, working with user forms, and more. These lessons are aimed at those who want to make their spreadsheets more professional and powerful. Finally, there is the developer series, which teaches you how to program using Visual Basic for Applications in Excel, letting you build custom Excel-based programs and connect Excel with other applications. Each series is broken up into levels, with each level lasting about an hour and building on the previous ones. Once you finish the basic levels, you will be ready for the expert series. Now, let's look at the topics we cover in this class: Lesson 1 introduces you to text insertion, including hyperlinks, text boxes, WordArt, and signature lines. Lesson 2 teaches you how to insert objects and symbols in your spreadsheets. Lesson 3 covers headers and footers, explaining the different sections and showing you how to use special codes for items like page numbers and dates. Lesson 4 explores View tab features like freezing panes and splitting the window, which are especially helpful for large spreadsheets. Lesson 5 focuses on borders and shows you how to print gridlines and modify borders for clearer layouts. Lesson 6 presents additional formatting tips such as merge cells, setting cell orientation, and using the Format Painter tool. Lesson 7 is about adding cell comments to document extra information and notes. Lesson 8 explores Excel's research tools, how to use the spell checker, thesaurus, translation function, and how to pull current stock quotes from the web. Lesson 9 is on using Microsoft Office Online templates. We will look at how to download templates like calendars, invoices, and mortgage calculators, and how to explore other available templates online. If you have questions about Excel, you can ask them in our student forums. If you are using our custom video player or online classroom, the forums will show up next to the lesson so you can see and participate in discussions. To get the best results, I recommend first watching each lesson all the way through without doing anything on your computer. Then, watch it again and follow along, recreating the example documents step by step with me. If you get stuck, just re-watch the relevant part of the video or return to the start. And remember, the student forums are always there for additional help. Learning something new can sometimes be confusing, so keep an open mind and do not get discouraged if things do not make sense right away. Be patient and post your questions if you need help. Now, get comfortable and prepare for lesson one. You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below. Live long and prosper, my friends.
