Excel - Time calculation
Jason

Excel 2000 - yeah, the company is a little behind the times.

I am trying to calculate cycle time.  I start a stopwatch and record the running time each time a part passes through a process.  I want to then enter that time into a spreadsheet and have Excel calculate the cycle time.  This should be easy...but I'm having trouble for some reason.  I can get it to calculate minutes...but I need it to be done in seconds since the cycle time is <1 min

My data may look like this...
15, 30, 46, 1:01, 1:17

I need Exel to calculate
15, 15, 16, 15, 16

Thanks!
Jason

Answer from Richard Rost:

Make sure you type in your times that are less than 1 minute in as:

0:15, 0:30, etc.

Stay consistent with your data! Otherwise, keep them all in seconds, and type in 1:01 as 67 seconds.

There are many different techniques in Excel you can use to break apart dates or times into their component parts, add or subtract dates, and figure out how much time is elapsed between two dates.

Read this free tutorial from my web site that explains how to work with adding dates and times in Excel:

I also have this FREE video tutorial that shows you how to get month names (like "September") from dates:

I spend a LOT of time talking about dates and times in my full Excel tutorials:
