Intro In this video, we will talk about how to find and resolve circular references in Microsoft Excel. I will explain what a circular reference is, what causes this error, and how you can use Excel's Formula Auditing tools to quickly locate cells involved in circular references using the Error Checking and Circular References options.
Transcript Finding circular references in Excel. You open up your Excel spreadsheet and it says there are one or more circular references. What does this mean? A circular reference is when you try to include a cell inside the range of other cells in formulas, like here.

I am trying to sum up B2 to B7, but B7 is where I am putting the sum, so it creates a circular reference that is trying to refer to itself. Usually you get this error message when you first create the circular reference, but if you miss it, maybe you are typing fast and you hit OK by accident or it is a sheet given to you by someone else, you might not find it.

How do you have Excel tell you where the circular references are? Go to Formulas. Come out over here in Formula Auditing, Error Checking, drop this down, and pick Circular References and Excel will show you where all the circular references are.

You can follow and visit my website for more tips.
Quiz Q1. What is a circular reference in Excel?
A. When a cell refers to itself directly or indirectly in a formula
B. When a formula contains an invalid character
C. When a formula refers to a cell outside the worksheet
D. When you use a circular chart in your worksheet

Q2. In the example from the video, why does summing B2 to B7 in cell B7 cause a circular reference?
A. Because B7 is included both in the sum range and as the result cell
B. Because B2 is empty
C. Because the sum function does not support ranges
D. Because B7 is formatted as text

Q3. What typically happens when you first create a circular reference in Excel?
A. Excel shows an error message
B. Excel automatically corrects it
C. Excel deletes your formula
D. Nothing changes

Q4. If you accidentally close the error message about a circular reference, what can you do to locate the error later?
A. Use the Formula Auditing tool's Circular References option
B. Save and reopen the spreadsheet
C. Change the worksheet color
D. Increase the column width

Q5. Which tab must you access in Excel to find the Circular References feature?
A. Formulas
B. Review
C. Insert

Summary Today's video from Excel Learning Zone is all about understanding and locating circular references in Excel. When you open up your spreadsheet and see a warning that there is one or more circular references, it means that one of your formulas is set up so that it refers back to itself, either directly or indirectly. For example, if you set up a SUM formula that tries to total the range from B2 to B7 and you put the formula itself in cell B7, you have created a situation where the result relies on itself, which confuses Excel.

Usually, Excel will notify you right away with a pop-up error as soon as you create a circular reference. However, it is easy to miss this notice, especially if you are working quickly or if you are working with a spreadsheet someone else has created. In that case, you might not notice that a circular reference exists, but it can cause problems with your calculations.

To find out exactly where the circular references are in your workbook, use the features in Excel's ribbon. Go to the Formulas tab, look for the Formula Auditing group, and then select Error Checking. In the Error Checking drop-down, you will see an option for Circular References. Excel will then provide a list of all cells involved in circular references, making them much easier to locate and correct.

You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below. Live long and prosper, my friends.
