Excel 2007 Copy & Paste Link
By Richard Rost   Richard Rost on LinkedIn Email Richard Rost   15 years ago

Q: I used to be able to copy and paste links between two spreadsheets in Excel. I would open up one file, select a range, and then Edit > Copy > Paste Link in the second file and Excel would make a link between them. This was also great in the middle of a function (like VLOOKUP) to be able to copy ranges. Now, this doesn't seem to work in Excel 2007. What can I do? >Kyle

A: Kyle, this feature still works, but Microsoft changed the implementation a little. If you just open two Excel workbooks you can't easily copy and paste links between them anymore. Why? I don't know.

You have to open the workbooks in the same "workspace" now. Here's how to do it: create your two files and save them.

Now, with FILE1 open, click on Office > Open and open up FILE2 so they're both in the same workspace (instance of Excel). Now click on View > Arrange All to get them both on the screen at the same time (I prefer Vertical, that's just me).

Now you'll find you can copy and paste links and ranges (even your VLOOKUP trick) between the two windows.

I know… confusing. It threw me for a loop too the first time.
