Sql Server

Richard,

you showed us how to use Pass through queries in the SQL Server Seminar and we are grateful for that. We are still waiting for 2.0 to show us how to use Views, Transactions, etc.

Views are just like queries in Access. You should have no problems figuring those out. You can attach to them just like tables. Transactions, Stored Procedures, etc. are coming. But you know what - I've never had a NEED to use them in any of my databases. They're cool, but Tables and Views are all you really need.

You'll want Stored Procedures if you have any parameter Queries.

am I the only one who sees the value of a second SQL Server seminar? Alex Hedley tells me I need Stored Procedures. All i need now is someone to show me how.

I would greatly appreciate a SQL Server 2.0. Richard may not need it but I sure do. :)

I'm definitely going to make more SQL Server lessons. They're coming. I don't think I'm going to make a 2.0 to that seminar because the point of that seminar was to teach you how to get up and running on SQL Server that's hosted on a web server. So, what I'm going to do next is probably an on-premises SQL Server and teach you how to work best with that. Everything I teach you there is also going to apply to an online SQL Server, but I want to make it so that everyone can value these lessons, whether they have it in-house or on the web.

I know a lot of companies that have an Access database and are starting to outgrow it need SQL Server, and a lot of them don't want their data online. A lot of them are very security-conscious. Back when I was a consultant, I had probably 10 or so clients that I initially set up with Access databases with 3 to 5 users... then it became 10 users... then it was 20 users... and then it was "well, time to move you up to SQL Server now." So it's something I've done a lot of.

This will be a new set of lessons, probably a brand new course type that will focus on SQL Server, with a focus on Access as a front-end. Whether you're using it online or on-premises won't matter, so it is definitely coming. Be patient; I've got a few things I want to do first before that.

Patience, grasshopper.
