Still Stuck on Part Number Handling
David Clement

Good morning Richard,
I am still stuck on how to enter a Part Number and have it give me all the information about that part number.
Part Number, Description and Bin Location all in one record like I showed in a previous forum post.
This is what I have come with, but it is still not quite right.

PN: [PartNumber] & [Description] & [BinLocation]

I just cant seem to grasp what I am doing wrong.

As always,
Thank you,
David

My PartF has over 21,000 records in it.
Sorry, my Concatenation sample is the first record in the query.
Thank you!

Let me get this straight. You've got three fields: part number, description, and bin location. And you want the user to be able to search on any part of any of those strings, so that when they type in their search query, if that set of characters appears in any of those three fields, the record shows. Is that what you're trying to do?

If that's the case, I actually have a similar topic on my list for a TechHelp video. How to search for a customer based on first name, last name, email, or phone number - all at once. I'll bump this video up the list.

Yes. I am just trying to make a Part Number Database, similar to the one that my company uses, the one that has multiple steps just to print a Barcode. In that Database, you enter in the PartID (Part Number) into what looks like a Continuous Form, it then returns the records for that Part Number. The Part Number itself, the Description for that Part Number, and the Bin Location.
The Database my company uses is an SQL Database, so I'm sure it works differently than one of yours, which I think is better by the way. I have posted in previous Forum sessions screenshots of this Databse.
Thank you so much for what I sometimes think are not quite right explanatiions of what I am trying to do.

Richard,
Based on your teachings, that Database is a mess, and it boggles my mind that there doesnt appear to be any Data Entry Guidelines. Things like Phone Numbers entered like this 800-555-1212 or like this 800 555 1212 or like this 555-1212 or like this 555 1212. Incomplete Street Addrsses and so on.
My company doesnt seem to be concerend too much about it, because it works, and they are making a ton of money using it that way.
From a Databse only point of view, and compaired to your methods, what a mess it is.

Richard,
I would like to send your more detailed screeshots of this Database, but it has Customer Information that I should not share online. I think that if you could see it, you would likely agree with me.

Use a graphics program like Paint to hide sensitive data you don't want others to see (see screenshot).

Richard,
I'm sure the software itself is okay, but when our Sales People were trained on how to use the software, they were not told just how important it is to enter information the correct way, like the way you teach. I am surprised that the designers of the software didn't set up stricker rules for the enteted date. Just sayin'.
Thank you for letting me vent a little.

Kevin, that looks very nice. Thank you.

Richard,
I can't type today.
Meant to say Stricter rules for the entered data.

Is this similar to what you are trying to do (screenshots below)?

The code is a lot simpler. You just need to use a Where condition in your OpenForm.

Private Sub btnSearch_Click()

If Not IsNull(txtPartSearch) And txtPartSearch <> "" Then
        DoCmd.OpenForm "PartF", , , "PartNumber LIKE """ & txtPartSearch & "*"""
    End If

End Sub

This will filter the results when the Form opens.

If you are more comfortable using a Query my screenshot below shows how. Set the Record Source of the results form to the name or your query. You can use the Button Wizard to open the form and show all records.

Richard,
This is a small sample of around 22,000 or so records in the Parts Databse. The Software has an Export Record Set in an Excel Format, where I can then make modifications to the recordset to what in my mind is a little easier to deal with. I have made search queries for all 3 fields and they all work just fine. I use them in my position at work to locate new parts as they come in that may need a new bin location. You can kind of do that with the Database software, but the my Access version is MUCH better!
