Filter and Dlookup Giving Different Results
Richard Garber

I have a search box that uses the following:

    Me.Filter = "PrdTitle LIKE ""*" & S & "*"""
    Me.FilterOn = True

    'Count records found...
    ID = DLookup("Addon_ID", "Data_MyAddons", "PrdTitle Like ""*" & S & "*""")
    MsgBox ID & " records found."

The Filter routine is finding the correct number of records, in this instance, 5. The DLookup routine is counting 3 records found though both are using the same criteria. I can't figure what I'm doing wrong. Please help.

The dlookup routine isn't counting at all. It's finding the Addon_ID which matches your criteria which happens to be 3. What you want to use is DCount

The second version of this same routine above has a twist to it that I can't wrap my brain around. I want now to count the number of Addons based on an Author's search. Here's my routine:

    Me.Filter = "PrdTitle LIKE ""*" & S & "*"""
    Me.FilterOn = True               <----- Up to here the Search works perfectly

    'Count records found...         <------ But using DCount is giving me the wrong results

    ID = Dcount("*", "Data_MyAddons", "AuthorName Like ""*" & S & "*""")
    MsgBox ID & " records found."

But Authorname is from a different table, Data_Authors.

What's confusing me is in the combo box field on the form, the author's name is showing. But what's actually stored is the Author ID.

The Filter box seems to have this all figured out. The results are right with it. But where I'm stuck is the criteria portion. Any help be appreciated!

Make a query , bring in the name from the other table and dcount on that.
