Access Developers Still In Demand
Richard Rost

Today I want to mention something I use that helps me stay on top of the Microsoft Access world. I have a daily Google Alert set up to notify me whenever Microsoft Access is mentioned on a new web page. Now sure, a lot of the hits are false positives or not really relevant, but every so often I find something interesting.

Today, for example, I came across a new job posting for someone with Microsoft Access skills. That just goes to show you that yes, there are still employers actively looking for Access developers.

Most of the people I teach are self-employed or small business owners who are building their own database systems. But there are still companies out there that use Access and need someone to develop or maintain their systems. It's still a solid choice for small and mid-sized businesses.

And if you're not quite ready to hang out your own shingle and work for yourself just yet, it's good to know there are still opportunities out there where you can put your Access skills to work.

And if you happen to be an Access developer in Southborough, Massachusetts (about 28 miles west of Boston - I had to look it up) then check out that page! They're looking for a Deputy Town Clerk. See, I'd never make it in a job like this. One of the requirements is "adherence to deadlines." I suck at that. That's one of the reasons I quit consulting - and don't post video release schedules.

I'm curious how Access developer fits into the job description for Deputy Town Clerk.
When developing, I never have time for a second job role. At least not for the first three years of development.
When I had my ad agency, yes, I had to do other roles. But then again, I was working 14-hour days.

Well, I went and read the advert. Maybe they mean proficient USER and not proficient DEVELOPER.

There's only one way to meet a deadline in estimating software development. Do a Scotty. Make a wild-a$$ guess, double that. Then double it again.
