I got into the habit of saving my work every time I make any change and I never override the existing file, I always create a file with the next version number.

If I am in the middle of development, I will save in the same manner after every time I create a form, report, or query, or add a table.  Disk space is dirt cheap. It is common for me to have 500 to 600 versions of my file during development.

Also, if you copy your backups to Google Drive, it does automatic versioning for you. So if you go to your Google Drive folder on the web, you can right-click on any file and look at all the previous versions of that file. It saves them all for you, which is really cool.
