New Access Features
Richard Rost

Big news for Access nerds: two new features are officially scheduled for release on the Roadmap for Microsoft Access, and they're actually useful ones. How useful? Let's just say I might finally stop squinting at my screen like a Ferengi trying to read fine print on a contract.

First up, zoom slider magnification is coming. Yep, an actual zoom control for Access forms and reports. You know, the thing Excel and Word have had since the Stone Age? Well, we're finally getting it in June 2025. Better late than never. I'll definitely use this one constantly, especially when demoing stuff on screen without making everything look like it was built for ants.

Second, July brings updates for better support on large-format monitors. If you're like me and running multiple high-res screens, you've probably noticed how Access forms are very limited in size and positioning. This update should help forms and reports behave better on big screens, which is great because cramming 1990s-sized forms into a 2025 workspace feels like trying to watch The Wrath of Khan on a Game Boy.

Now I can actually talk about these publicly because Microsoft finally made them official. So no more, "I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you" moments. The NDA phasers have been set to stun.

Granted, the last two things they rolled out - modern charts and the Monaco code editor - are still a bit buggy. I haven't even made videos on those yet. But the fact that they're still pushing updates and adding genuinely helpful features is another strong sign that Access is alive and well, even after some of the recent layoffs at Microsoft.

So yes, these are good signs, indeed.

Now if they could just do something about those itty bitty checkboxes.  Oh, but we don't need those anymore, do we?  Richard pretty much made those obsolete.  Yay!

Yeah but it would still be nice if that was built in to Access.

Are the updates for 360 only?  Asking for a "friend" who doesn't use 360....  :-)

Yes. 365 only. Users with a perpetual license (Access 2019, 2021, 2024, etc.) will have to wait until the next version comes out.

Sami LOL!!!  What can I say...  I'm old and old school!  Maybe I'll subscribe to 360 when I get one of those Musk Neuralinks.

Being old and old school describes me down to a T.

Sam I was always skeptical too of paying for software on a subscription basis, but now that I'm used to it, I actually kind of like it. I pay for Office 365 for my business, which is less than $10/month. To me, I'd rather do that than pay $200 every couple of years, plus you get constant updates and stuff.

Or even subscriptions that I sign up for online, you know I'd rather pay $8/month than if I don't like it or don't use it after three months I can cancel. Instead of spending $80 for a piece of software that I'm going to use for a few times and then stop using it.

And the funny thing is, as an MVP, I could get Microsoft Office for free, but I've had the same account forever, so I don't mind paying the few bucks a month.

Sami I use them everywhere.  And not just as "check" boxes.
