Better Solution for Providing Support
Raymond Spornhauer

Is there a way to provide real time video support or remote login for Access Learning Zone Users?

It would also be good to have someplace to share database files.

Thanks,

-Raymond

If you're looking for PAID help you can useAccess Developer Network

With regards to your other questions there are multiple pieces of software available, depends what works for you and the person you're helping.

Alex

When reading the forums... it's sometimes hard to interpret what others are asking for help on... then going back and forth with messages and images... I was thinking it might be easier to be able to connect using Teams or some other platform, but it's also good to still have it in one place like Ricks website.

Just wanted to see if this is something other users run into and/or if there is a better way to help.

Some people do take it "offline" aka away from the site.
I guess it's a balance as it's good to have it on the site so others can see the problem and the solution.
But also a majority of the questions are simpler and don't warrant in-depth info as then a lot of context is needed as it could be very specific to your use case.

I guess people could suggest how they want to help or be helped and go from there.

Thanks for bringing this up, Raymond I totally understand the frustration that can come with trying to troubleshoot something complex via back-and-forth forum posts. Sometimes a quick screen share or real-time chat feels like it would be a whole lot easier.

That said, I try to keep support and collaboration happening within the forums for a few important reasons. First and foremost, it's about safety. I want to make sure this stays a secure and trusted place for everyone, and once people start connecting off-site, I can't vet who's giving advice, what's being shared, or what expectations are being set. Unfortunately, I've seen too many situations elsewhere where that opens the door for bad info, or worse, scams. (See today's Captain's Log if you want examples.)

Second, keeping discussions here means future students can learn from the same questions and solutions. Even if it takes a few posts to clarify what someone's trying to ask, that trail can be invaluable for the next person with the same problem. A live Teams session wouldn't have that capability.

And finally, this site isn't really meant to be a general tech support forum. It's a learning community for my students. The questions and help shared here are ideally tied to lessons in the courses. If someone needs more personalized or in-depth help beyond that, the Access Developer Network is a good place to look.

So while I get the appeal of something like Teams or Zoom, I'd really prefer folks not use the site as a way to organize off-platform meetups or support sessions. Not because I don't trust regulars like you, but because I want to keep the whole experience focused, safe, and fair for everyone.

Now... I did used to have a Chat Room that I built for the site. I used it for customer service. Maybe I could resurrect that for support when two or more users are online. Then have the transcript just copied to the message thread. You can already see when another user is "online" but that just looks to see if they've been active in the last 10 minutes. They may have posted and logged off already.

Appreciate you asking, though. It's a good conversation to have.

Also... years ago, I did allow users to share links to their database files, and one person posted a link to something that... well... let's just say it wasn't a database at all. I don't want to be liable for someone accidentally downloading something malicious (or highly inappropriate), so I just don't allow off-site files or links anymore. It's mostly about protecting the community.

I totally understand.  My desire to help is sometimes surpassed by my patience.  Lol

And that's a good quality to have. I've learned in literally DECADES of doing this that it's best to just ask the relevant questions and have them post the information I need... and sometimes (I'd say at least a third of the time) they figure it out on their own in the interim... which is THE BEST way to learn. I want people to pull their hair out A LITTLE BIT trying to figure stuff out. Spoon-feeding people the answers all the time doesn't do them as much good as letting them struggle a bit. It's like teaching your kids how to swim or ride a bike... bruised knees are part of the game. :)

In Hong Kong, they put knee-pads, elbow-pads and helmets on 2-year-old kids sitting on a bike with no pedals who couldn't hurt themselves if they tried! No chance to experience.  Sad.

Sounds like a lot of the helicopter parents here in the States. When I was a kid, it was "go out and play." Be home when the streetlights come on. We'd ride our bikes to Tijuana for all they knew lol.
