Relationships

Hi Everyone!
I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with the relationships between tables. I have a screenshot to share, but I don't see a way to do that on here. I'm currently taking the relationships seminar, and I still can't seem to get it right. I would love some suggestions. Eventually, what I hope to accomplish is designing a way to pull up one single author from the table to show all the books I have in the library of that author.

I would try to setup my tables and relationships similar to established ERD's like the one I just posted.

You probably don't need the Genre, Customer, Review or Order_Detail Tables.

Hope this helps,

-Raymond

Thanks, Raymond, that helps a lot. Where you have one called BookT, I could make the one I call KindleLibraryT look like that, or would it be best just to create BookT I have in that fashion and leave KindleLibraryT as is?

John Thanks, John. The problem I am mostly having is that everything is set up on the videos for business or family. I can't seem to put it together in my head where to place my tables in place of the ones in the videos to work for me. I will give all of them that you mentioned a look at. I am enrolled in all the Access courses and the Access Seminar at present.

It depends on how you want your database to work... and on what you might want to do with it later.

Books come in many different forms... hardback, paperback, kindle, pdf, audio, spiral bound, etc...

Maybe you should add a BookTypeT and then you can assign that to each type of book you have.

Also... we don't know what you're trying to do with this... if this is just for your personal books, you could set it up one way, but if this is for a business, you might want to make it conform to something more business oriented.  It also changes depending on how you're getting your book data.  Some distributors provide their book information in a certain format... and that could dictate how you set it up so you're not recreating the wheel.

Understanding how relationships work in databases is not always easy... and the more exposure you get to different types of databases and working with them helps you to better understand how they work.  My suggestion would be to look thru the classes John mentioned... then look thru the database series Rick has done in the past and it will help you really understand the concepts and help you understand what you really to want to do.

Rick's Database Series:
Fitness
Accounts Payable
Attendance
Job History
Employee Training
Students and Parents
Multiple Addresses
Help Desk

Raymond Thanks for the idea of the BookTypeT. I originally had that on the Library Table but it looked a bit busy. Eventually, what I hope to accomplish is designing a way to pull up one single author from the table to show all the books I have in the library of that author. I also do have Genre listed in the table too. I guess I just need to keep working it put till I can get a way to create tables that will have relationships to each other. I've been so busy lately with seminary lessons that I really am going to need to go back over it all. Ken
