Auto Index

Completely agree with your naming conventions, but I know that some people started with other conventions and prefer to stick with them.

That being said, if they're not going to "stay in the zone" ;) with your naming conventions and they have something they prefer for their IDs, in Access, you can set keyword phrases that will automatically get indexed in the backstage.

BackStage -> Options -> Object Designers

Near the top of that tab, you can see the various phrases Access will auto-create an index on and add your own.

I believe Access auto-generates indices for you in some cases, even if the field name doesn't contain id, key, code, or num.  In my old job, my databases had been in use for decades plus, and some tables had long lists of indices, even though I seldom manually created indices.  I actually ran into over-indexing, which could be a problem itself.

Donald ah, yes, I completely forgot about that option. Thanks for sharing that. I'll mention it in a future video. See, there's so many settings in there, if you don't use them on a regular basis, you forget they're there.

Kevin yeah, over-indexing is definitely a problem, especially if you've got a database that's primarily built on data entry. I built a system once for this company where they had 15 people doing constant data entry all day long, and maybe once a month they ran a report on that stuff. So I basically indexed nothing, LOL. And it just sped up their data entry so much.
