Add New Record Form

I've had an Add new record form for some time on my database but I've noticed some pitfalls of a form with it's fields bound to the table it's adding to. There is some vba code to do lookups and make sure there's no duplicates ( as well as the underlying fields no duplicate property ) validation rules set, input masks etc and other date calculations done to get the correct input from the user. Fields have to be filled in in a certain order so conditional formatting wrt "enable" is employed.

You still get the odd time it'll save via the inbuilt functions before you hit the save button or if the form refreshes for any reason.
I'm trying to change it to an unbound form and making an append query to add the new record so there is complete control over when a record is saved.

I just wondered if this is the best way to go about it?

If you have fields that require validation rules, making the Fields Unbound and using VBA to check all your rules is a better way in my opinion.

One thing you'll need to decide:
- Do you want VBA to check each field as they fill out the Form OR
- Do you want VBA to check all the fields before you Append?

Depending on how many fields you have and how you want the database to work, that will be up to you.

They need to be checked as they fill in the fields working their way down the form. I enable the save button once they reach the end of the fields check boxes etc. The original Add Record form was OK but I tried a few things like if a user goes back to a previously edited control to modify what they entered. Access enters the previous input to the table so if you undo the form it goes back to previously entered instead of null or default values. ( I think that's what's happening )

I can have more control over the unbound form cos stuff like that doesn't happen.
