Vacation Requests
Ed

well basically we have about 200 drivers we track on a weekly basis. These drivers have up to 5 weeks vacation we have to track including floaters and the occasional request. I made a form in conjunction with a table so the user can punch in Vacations Requests Etc. I want to take that info after it is put in and make a report so it will tell me who is on vacation for the current week. Basically this is important because we have to shift personal when a Employee is out Because someone has to Drive the truck and it is my job to figure out who. I don't know if this helped but that is the best way I can think to explain it. On A side note what is your best Class or Classes to learn SQL. I am Trying to Teach myself SQL with your help of course. Your advice on either one is greatly appreciated

                    Thanks,

Reply from Richard Rost:

If you entered each VACATION DAY as a unique record in a table, then it would be easy to generate a query showing all of the people who have off on a specific day. If your table is basically like this, then it would be easy:

EmployeeID, VacationDate
1, 1/1/14
1, 1/2/14
1, 1/3/14
etc.

However, if you want to be able to specify START DATE and END DATE, then that adds a LOT of complexity to the situation. Are you OK with adding vacation days as individual dates? If so, then all you have to do is make a query, enter the date as a criteria, and it will show you all of the employees that are on vacation that day. It's a little more data entry up front, but it will save you a lot of work on the back end.

As far as SQL goes, I have a 3-part seminar series on the SQL LANGUAGE and how to use it with Access. I have a seminar planned for SQL SERVER later this summer/fall.
