Probably Tech Help for SQL Server and Access
Julian Dyer

Hi All,

I am buying a new pc, "they" the computer sellers have asked me what size Ram is required for the programmes Access and SQL Servers etc to work.  8GB Ram is installed but can be upgraded.   I use sage 50 professional accounts, Windows 11, Access, Word and Excel and AdobePro on the pc's at the moment.

What do you think I would need to support the Access database.

Any ideas? of what I would need, or get as much as I can to be on the safe side.

Thanks
Julian

Access alone is recommended to have 8GB for better performance, especially if running larger databases.
SQL server (depending on edition) max is recommended 4GB.
If you're multitasking it also depends on processor speed and memory transfer rate.
personally, with memory costs as they are at the moment (not as expensive as they were) I'd go for a minimum of 16GB.
32GB - you're looking on the safe side for sure.

If you can, you might make sure that whatever ram you go with only uses half of your ram slots and leaves the others open, if you plan to upgrade.  If all of the slots are full, you have to buy all new modules.

Good call on 16GB  Windows needs 8GB to perform properly

I concur. I would go with 16 GB at a minimum; 32 if you can afford it. I'll talk about this in tomorrow's Quick Queries a little bit.
