Updating Backend Tables from Frontend
Chris Bezant

I split all my databases for distribution. Once in production in a remote location I sometimes need to introduce a new back end table or add a new field to an existing back end table. Many other people must be in this situation so I think it would be a popular course or seminar on how to achieve this. I envisage a front end routine that checks back end tables and makes any alterations. I'm sure you could make this look easy. Best Regards. Chris in a sunny England.

Chris, I've been in the situation myself where I've had to have customers databases update so they can connect to the server with changes. Are these situations where you are sending the customer a new front end and it has to make changes to the server like adding a new field to a linked table? Modifying the front end and sending it out is no big deal. Adding fields and changing things on the back end table is where the complication is. Is that what you're looking to do?

Alex, the SQL Seminar covers modifying table structure, but I'm not sure if that works with LINKED tables. I'll have to experiment. We may need to use Recordsets for this. I'm redoing the Recordset 320-329 lessons very soon.

Yes, the front end needs to change the back end table. I only use Access as back end, I haven't got to SQL Server yet so it's just an Access thing.

OK. I'll do a little experimentation and see if I can get it to work with SQL. If not, Recordset lessons coming very soon. I also just recently finished designing a couple of different types of backup routines for my database - one to copy the ACCDB files to a backup folder nightly, another to backup data from a remote table (great for web-based SQL server tables) down to the local database for safe keeping. This would make a nice addon to that one.
