Search As You Type
Jim Byers

My first form is 99.9% complete. Just one more thing to fix before I move onto the next one.
I have a search combo box that is populated from the 'FullName' field or column of the table 'CustomerT'.
It's runs via a macro set up automatically by Access 2016 when created it.
It works, but not how I want.

If I enter say the letter B, it auto-fills the first name it comes to starting with that letter. Hit 'Enter' and the form
opens to that record.

The problem is, there are more than one client with names starting with that letter.
Obviously, if I keep typing it finds others but always lists just one.

This showed up because I happen to have 3 clients. Bev Onename, Bev Twoname, & Beverly Threename.

What I'm hoping for is to see, when I type in a letter, the combo box drops the list down showing all the names starting
with that letter.
Type a second letter and that list shrinks to only people whose name starts with those two letters and so on until I've typed in 'Bev' at which time there should be only 3 names on the list. Click on the one I want and her record opens.

It seems I can't post images on this forum but I'll transcribe the Macro

It triggers After Update

SearchForRecord
   Object Type
   Object Name
        Record First
Where Condition =="[ID]="&Str(NZ9[Screen].[ActiveControl],0)

Is it as simple as changing 'Record First' to 'Record All'?

This is actually fairly complicated and involves some coding. I cover it in the Search As You Type examples in both Access Developer 8 and the Search Seminar.

And yes, allowing users to upload images is something I'm going to add in the near future. I still have to do it the old fashioned way myself (FTP the image to my server and manually type in an IMG tag in the HTML). I'm getting there.

Thank you Richard. It looks like the Seminar is outside my budget but the Access Dev 8 is do-able, just not this very second.
At least I now know where to look to learn how to do it. Sometimes I question my philosophy of "working out what I want first, figure out how to make it happen later" approach to things. But, not likely to change I'm afraid. What's that thing about old dogs and new tricks?
Images on the forum is a very minor point in my opinion. But if you're interested, have you looked at phpBB? It's open source, which I personally choose to support where possible, and very well put together straight out of the box without any rewriting of code. Might be worth a look for you. I'm sure your time can be better spent elsewhere, like helping complete novices do things they have no idea how to do. :-)

Yeah, I looked into a couple of different 3rd party Forum/BBS packages, but ultimately decided I would rather build it myself. I already had the core of the Forums built about 10 years ago. They just needed some love and upgrading. Plus, it's a learning experience for me too - I've figure out some new ways of doing things and I love tinkering. I can't be recording videos ALL the time. LOL
