SQL to insert PDF doc into table
Eric Michalek

Did some research and still can't figure it out.
The goal:
A form where users drag and drop in scanned (PDF documents).  So far I am using a bound object frame as it gives me the thumb nail view.  Then they click a command button that fires off an insert into SQL statement.
My problem is getting the contents of the bound object frame inserted into the OLE object using my SQL.

Honestly, I've never done this before. I did spend a few days trying to figure out ANY way to do drag-and-drop with Access just using text boxes. Couldn't do it. Access doesn't support drag-and-drop without 3rd party add-ons, and I hate those. Personally, I'm against storing objects like PDF files INSIDE your database. That makes it big and bloated (and slow). I'd recommend storing them in a server folder and putting links to them in your database. I talk about this in my Imaging Seminar.

Storing the PDF inside the database is temporary, and it frees IT persons from having to constantly adjust permissions for folders in the share drive.
Users drag and drop the PDF into the frame, click a button, SQL inserts new record in table (but need vba to get the PDF contents into the table).  Once it is there, administrators approve the record.  When they approve the record, VBA creates a folder for the PDF, moves it to the folder which frees up that data space, and creates a link so it can be viewed later on.  There are only 2 persons who need control to edit or delete the PDF.  Again this is getting around ID persons as well as preventing someone from deleting or modifying the approved PDF document.

I can see that being handy. I suppose if it's only temporary that wouldn't be a huge hit on the server. Again, this isn't something I've done before, but I can't see it being that hard. Is anyone else interested in this topic? If so, I'll do a little research and make a video out of it. Or if you want me to take this on as a project and you need it done quickly, see my Consulting page.
