Thousands on a combo

I am really beginning to think I have the basic layout of my database. Now that we are really getting to use it I have a few questions.

Is there an easier way to manage THOUSANDS of customers? We have at least 500 birthday parties a year (and so 500 new/repeat customers)  Scrolling through 50 entries in a combo box is manageable, but what happens when there are thousands? I cant really archive them because some come back every year, but once a year.

ALSO, is there a way to have the combo box default to the NEW entry once you open the Edit LIst  form and close it?

One more question, When I lookup a field it is showing the ID and I want it to show the data (ie- I have a table for week days to choose (combo based on a table) what day of the week the session happened. When I look up that value it shows numbers 1-7 and I want to show Monday-Sunday)

Recomend not use a combo box but a list box, wild card search by first two letters of last name or first name  richard has several tech tip n this.  This will cut down the number of names displayed.  For the Combo box with numbers refrence the column you are viewing.  ComboBoxName.Column(1).
Hope this points you in the right direction.

Combo boxes do get unwieldy when you have that many customers. If you sort them by last name and start typing the first few characters of their last name, it should bring you to that area of the list quickly. If not, a more comprehensive search form would probably be better. Lots of resources on searching available: Search Seminar. Search Form. Search Button.

You want to add a value to a combo box using a List Items Edit Form and then populate the value in the box when the form closes? Can it be done? Yes. But it will require programming which may be a little past your skill level right now. Ask me again when you get into VBA programming (the Developer courses). I show how to use the On Not In List event in this Extended Cut: Relational Combo

As far as the days go, make a combo box with two columns in it:

1, Sunday
2, Monday
etc.

Then HIDE the first column. Combo Boxes.

That helps for now. I am kind up to lesson Expert 10 because I keep going back and watching them over. There is just a lot to learn.

Indeed there is. I've been "learning" Access for 28 years, and even I still don't know everything... yet. :)
