Combo Box Values

Hi All

I have a continuous subform in my order form with comboboxes. The combobox reference  to a order description  table where all the descriptions made with orders to a specific client are listed.
Now if I make a new order, I can pick a description from previous orders, or type a new description in the combobox. 1 order can have many descriptions. My reason for having this is that there are many drawings bound to each description that I don't want to type in again.
So the problem,
When I have selected 1 description  in the first combobox, I want this description to be hidden when I drop down the combobox in the next description line of the order.
I dont want the user to pick the same description 2 or 3 times in the same order.
How do I do this.

See Cascading Combo Box

---
You typically would not utilize that in a continuous form.  Normally you would use a form / subform (that is continuous) to display - work with the records they way you are talking about.
Similar to having a Order for a customer with many line items in the order.  Invoicing

If I'm not under standing the question maybe you could post an example or two what you are trying to do.
Blank sensitive data of course.

Hi Scott, the description form is a continuous subform in the order form.
Example,
I create an order (main form), then in the description subform if I know I have made this component before, I drop down the description combo and choose a description from a previous order from that client.
This will be the first record (order description)
Second line, you can drop the combo again, and choose another description. But I want the previous selction to be hidden in the combo so the user don't pick it again.

Richard (or Alex) Need your help here.  I know you covered this.  I know how but wanted to point Kim in the right direction and I can't find it. Was it in one of the templates?

Kim -
I see that you have Developer 23 - Go watch Lessons 3 - 5 to get you started while we're waiting on Richard.
Basically there are disadvantages in the way you have your order line set up currently with the combo box that way.  It's workable but as you discovered one problem is it cant check, easily any way, for other existing line items that are the same.

Another issue is that if you ever change the order product it will change it for all orders that have that line item you had in the past as well.
Richard covers that in the course I linked above.

Hi Scott,

I will do that, thanks
My idea is to first find the solution on how to fix the combo. Then after how to lock the values if it is a pick from the drop down.

Also check out the Subforms
In the extended cut there is a related problem that may give you ideas.

Thanks, Scott.

Hi Kim. You really can't change what's listed in a combo box that's in a continuous form PER RECORD. When you change one, you change ALL of them. What I would suggest is that you put your selection combo box in the FOOTER of the continuous form. You can modify that so you can remove already selected items. Then in the detail section, just store the ID and display the name as a non-updateable text box. If they want to change it, they'll have to delete the item and re-add it. This can be a tricky setup. I don't think I've covered something like this, so perhaps I'll add it to a Developer lesson.

I show how to remove products that have been added to the order in Access Developer 36, Lesson 3.

Kim -
Richard just released a new video Prevent Duplicates yesterday that may help you out.

You may want to consider getting a TechHelp membership.  These alone would save you a bunch of headaches.
