Annual Equipment Maintenance

Hello all, I recently found these videos and website for MS Access and am excited to get started. I used Access YEARS AGO (like 20 or so) and trying to get back into it.  So far, I've successfully built several tables, queries and forms to get the bulk of what I want done, but now I'm stuck as to where to go from here.

Here's my question...I work for a fire department that has to test our air packs on an annual basis.  We have about 150 packs that need preventative maintenance and testing done on them by an outside company.  So for a week in April, we have to track down every pack and give them to the testing company to inspect/repair/test.  I'd like to create a way to manage this operation during that week.  Right now we use a sheet of paper that has every pack listed on it and as they get tested, we just check them off.  My question is what is the best way to accomplish this? In my head I see a method where when a pack is completed, I search for it in the database, find the record and then hit a button that automatically puts in the information that that pack was tested for this current year.  I have already built the associated tables and forms similar to the vehicle maintenance video that keeps track of any repairs made outside of the annual service.  So, when a button is pushed, it would add a line in that pack's service history that said "Annual Service complete" with the date.  Along with that, I'd like a report that could be generated that showed all of the packs that still need to be located and tested.
I hope that all makes sense, but if not, I'd be happy to try to explain it further.  Thanks so much for everyone's time and thanks to Richard for making all of those great video's!!

Depending on what you want to do and how much you know. This could be as simple as a one to many relationship with a checkbox and date field. I'd at least watch the Relationships video. See below for example

Hi Y'all looking at your rank you may need some walking through this.  I am thinking the vehicle maintenace and tweek it to your needs.  At a minimum two tables items and date inspected with dateadd showing the next date for inspection.  look at the tech help video vehicle maintenance and dateadd function and see.  Always know you can ask and you will get help.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.  I actually already had the two tables built (after watching the relationships and vehicle maintenance videos, both are very good) and they are working like I intend.  I also built a form that shows the pack information with a sub form in it that shows each service record for that specific pack. I guess my question is more specific to what the best way would be to design a system where, once a year, we could go in and find a pack, select it, hit a button, and it would add a record in the service table for that pack that said something to the effect of 'Pack service check complete' with the date. Then I would like to build a report that showed us the remaining packs we still had to service for that year. Yesterday, after watching the search video, I was able to build a search page where I could locate a specific pack and it would take me to that packs record. I just don't know how to proceed from here.

I wasn't able to find a video that spoke to a button adding information to a record. I know I'm new to this, but what I lack in knowledge I make up for with determination and willingness to fail. When I was making the search form, it took me about three hours to get it to do exactly what I wanted. It was A LOT of trial and error, but I'm patient. :)

Sorry for two posts as one reply, but I got cutoff on the first one. Thank you again for all of your guys' help! I appreciate it.

You will save yourself a lot of time and agony if you continue with the courses.  If you are really serious about learning access you should check out the Learning Connection.  There is a steep discount if you really want to do it right.
Dont over look the TechHelp Membership either.  The extended cuts are worth the price of a Starbucks a month.  (Better for your sanity too!  IMHO)

I actually just bought the beginner series this morning. I liked the idea of the Learning Connection, but kind of wanted to have this mostly done by mid-April so that we could use it for this year's pack testing.  Only getting a lesson once a week wasn't going to cut it for me.
And yes, Juan, thank you as always.  If you or someone else can tell me if it's possible to have a button enter records, that would be phenomenal!

Learning connection isn't limited to once a week Joshua, if you want to grab a few classes a week or whatever you want to do, just shoot Richard an email and he can bump it up.

From the Learning Connection
Can I get more than one class per week?

Sure. You can take the classes faster than one per week if you want to. Just contact me and tell me to send you 2, 3, or however many classes you want. If you want to take a long weekend to binge-watch lessons, just let me know and I can send you the next 3 or 4 in a row all at once. I'm very flexible. The key is that you watch them in order.
