Dog database
Deborah Baker

I am creating a form based off 2 tables- dog table,  owner table.  A dog can have the possibility of 3 types of ids in 3 different column . Thinking I should set up dog table with dogid as primary key and owner table with dogid and add ownerid as primary key on the owner table .

My form is setup with dog table as main portion of form and owner table as a subform to be able edit records etc

Then I will add another subform to add dog to events . This I think will be a junction type table

Does this sound like headed down the correct direction

Thank you
Debbie

Just thinking out loud here.
One owner can have many dogs but each dog usually only has one owner.
Usually you would deal with a person or representative then look up the dog from there.
You might have two "Spots" but they would belong to different people.

Personally I would make my owner table the primary table in the form.  I'd bring in the dog table as a continuous form that would list all of the dogs that person is the owner of.  I'd then make a second form to edit the info specific to that dog.
You mentioned the dog might have 3 IDs, are you speaking Record IDs, or credential IDs? Like AKC, Chip, Local License, etc?  That would bring in another couple of tables.

There really isn't a right or wrong in either way.  You can set up both and point them back and forth to each other.
Planning your tables is probably one of the more time consuming things you will do for your database.
Making tables and forms is the easy part.

See the Normalizing Data video - Good info there.

Thank you so much for responding it makes perfect sense

The 3 ids referring to is registration number a dog can have an akc number , ILP or litter number. A dog can't have all 3 of those Ids only one

Then that dog can be entered in many events
