Recursion
Thomas Wallace

Hello, I have a database that stores versions of software that have been submitted to my organization, we use the primary key ID called media# number as a serial number, when we get a new version of the SW we add a new record and new ID, but we also record the superseding ID number in a different field called superseded. so eventually we have a trail of recent SW and all the previous versions bouncing back and forth between media# and superseded fields. I would like to create a query, form or report that shows the current record I'm on and then looks up all the previous versions by tracing the superseded field back to the media# field until the superseded field is blank. I can't think of anyway to do this or to even google search for it as it takes a paragraph to explain it here. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Can you show a screen shot of what you mean?

Richard, I have uploaded a screen shot of the media table in design view. I have moved the two fields I'm working with together so it is easier to see.

Alex pointed you to the right lesson. What you need is some kind of a recursive loop. It's the same as building a breadcrumb trail. You'll see it at the top of my website. This page is under the Access Forum, which is under the Forums, which is under the Home page. Home > Forums > Access. The only way to generate that is with a recursive loop. Developer 21 might be a better lesson for you, but they both teach it.
